Our History 1967 Pembroke Telephone Cooperative was officially incorporated on July 3, 1967. From 1903 until that time, telephone services were provided to a limited portion of our current services areas by the old Pembroke Mutual Telephone Company. Pembroke Telephone Cooperative’s original service area was limited to a portion of Eastern Giles County. 1969 The Board of Directors obtained an REA Loan which was used to construct the original Pembroke Telephone Cooperative Business Office. 1970 On June 27, 1970 the official cut-over to Pembroke Telephone Cooperative’s new switching system took place at 11:49 pm. This switch was an electro-mechanical, dial-only type switching device. It remained in service for 16 years. 1971 In 1971, Pembroke Telephone Cooperative constructed outside plant facilities which would provide service to the areas of Kire and Big Stony. Telephone Service had previously been unavailable in those areas. Also in 1971, Pembroke Telephone Cooperative held its first ever Annual meeting which was held on the grounds of the newly constructed business office. Harvey Niday & Jack Gurley, Jr. work to make the switch to Pembroke Telephone Cooperative’s switching system.
Emmett Britts places the first Long Distance Call made on Pembroke Telephone Cooperative’s switching system. Following the switch to the new equipment, operators were no longer required to complete calls. 1984
