Federal Universal Service Charge NEW! A recent Federal Communications Commission (FCC) order changed the way telephone companies can recover their federal universal service fund contributions. Because of this decrease in the FCC's universal service contribution factor, you will see a decrease in the Federal Universal Service Charge (FUSC) amount on your bill effective July 1, 2010. The new FUSC amount is calculated by multiplying the FCC's universal service contribution factor times your interstate service charges. The federal universal service fund program is designed to help keep local telephone service rates affordable for all customers, in all area of the United States.
Rights of Way Fee NEW! On July 1, 1998, changes were made to the Code of Virginia for the establishment of a public right of way use fee to cover the use of highway and street right of way by certified providers of telecommunications services. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for calculating the monthly fee per access line based upon a formula within the code. Effective July 1, 2010 the fee will decrease from $.89 to $.76 per access line. All telecommunications companies affected by this legislation are required to include the charge on their billing and to submit the collections to the appropriate government agency. For questions, please call our office at 540-626-7111.

Lifeline & Linkup Lifeline is a government program that assists the disabled, elderly and medically at-risk individuals in receiving telephone service at reduced rates. To be eligible, you must participate in either the Medicaid or Food Stamp programs. Lifeline can only be used for the main telephone line in a household. Linkup helps pay a portion of the connection charges for the telephone service to the outside of your house. If you currently have telephone service with Pembroke Telephone Coop, there is no charge to switch to Lifeline Service. Lifeline reductions do not apply to long distance services, surcharges or taxes. Optional calling services are not offered on telephone lines using Lifeline Service. Being a Lifeline or Link-Up customer does not protect you from being disconnected if you fail to pay your telephone bill. Call our office at 626-7111 for more information.
Important “Do Not Call” Reminder The National Do Not Call Registry was created to prevent unwelcome calls from telemarketers. It prohibits all telemarketing except from companies with which you have an existing business relationship, and certain non-profit organizations from calling you. Once your number has been on the registry for thirty (30) days, telemarketers should no longer call you. Your number will remain on the registry permanently unless you request that it be removed. The Do Not Call Registry now also allows you to register your personal cell phone numbers. To register your phone number simply call (888) 382-1222 or (866) 290-4238 (TTY). You can also register or obtain additional information by logging on to www.donotcall.gov.
