broadband speed guide

The following information is derived from the Federal Communications Commission's Household Broadband Guide.  This information may be helpful in determining the High Speed Internet plan best suited for your needs. (PDF version is available for download HERE)
The first step in deciding what plan is best for you is to determine what type of activities the service will be used for.
LEVELS OF USE:
  • Light Use = Basic functions such as Email, Browsing, Internet Radio and/or Basic Video.
  • Moderate Use = Basic Use plus one high-demand application such as streaming video, video conferencing, gaming, etc.
  • High Use = Basic functions plus more than one high-demand application running at the same time.
NUMBER OF DEVICES:
The second step is to determine how many users and/or devices will be accessing the service.
Count your devices.  These devices use a portion of the total bandwidth included in your plan any time they are powered on, even f they are not in use.

The list below will help you when counting the number of devices in your home:

  • Desktop Computers
  • Laptop Computers
  • Wireless Printers
  • Tablets
  • E-Readers
  • Cell Phones
  • Wireless Gaming Devices
  • Assistant Devices (such as Google, Alexa, Siri, etc.)
  • Wireless Doorbells
  • Security Cameras
  • Alarm systems
  • Smart TV's
  • Satellite TV Boxes
  • Smart DVD/Blu-Ray Players
  • Streaming Devices (such as Roku, Chromecast, Firestick, etc.)
  • Smart Watches
  • Smart Home Devices (such as Smart Thermostats, Smart Smoke Detectors, etc.)
  • Smart Appliances (such as Stoves, Refrigerators, Washers, Dryers, etc.

(The above list is not conclusive and is intended for reference only and does not necessarily list all applicable devices)
SPEED PLAN REQUIRED:
Once you have determined the level of use and number of devices you will be using, it is easier to select a plan that will suit your needs.  Select the level of use below for additional details.
